The Inspiration

I needed a series-based Winry costume for the skit "Super Elric Bros." -- and the quickest, easiest choice seemed to be her Mechanic's Outfit. Especially when I found out that her suit in the Manga is a khaki color, not lavender. This was obviosuly long before "Brotherhood" came out.

The Build

Probably one of my Biggest Cop-Out Costumes Ever. I mean, I really phoned this one in. I already had my wig from my Movie version, so that was one less thing I had to do for this, I just had to do a temporary re-style by unclipping it. Originally, I intended to make her second top, the one with straps, a white band down the front, and a zipper, but I ran out of time and churned out a tube top using a black knit fabric I had lying around. Bad idea in hindsight. Baby-Me did not understand that knits stretch, but they don't hold their shape like spandex/lycra. It stretched out quickly and began to droop heavily. I needed safetypins and lots of tape to keep it in place for the skit.

The suit itself is a real mechanic's suit purchased from an Army Surplus seller on ebay. I only took it in a bit to be more flattering, but even then it didn't do much for me. >.> The kercheif is leftover from the fabric I used for Sango's apron, and I had NO IDEA how to tie that on my head, so any shots that show the back of my head are rather... odd, and have been purged from existance. The sandals were a pair of sliders I got at the thrift store, and then painted. They gave me awful blisters though. I quickly retired this costume, because it was far from my best work, and it was very unflattering. If I were to advise anyone on making this, I would tell them to make the suit from scratch, and make the sleeves waaaay longer than human sleeves should be, in order to get the right look.
