The Inspiration

This was supposed to be for SakuraCon 2020, to correspond with my assistant Katie in her Gloria costume. And then Covid happened, the con was cancelled, and half the stuff I ordered was lost in the mail for a couple months. In the end I did eventually get everything I ordered, some for free since I was refunded when it was lost in the mail.

The Build

This costume really walks the line of Bought/Modified vs Made. I thought about putting her in with the modified costumes, but I ended up doing a lot of work on her. More than I planned.

The wig was a twin-tail clip-in wig I got on Ali Express. I completely straightened and re-styled the ponytail, and sacrificed the second tail to sew extra wefts into the ponytail, and into the side of the base wig. I'm very pleased with it, for being a $17 wig. The glasses were bought on AliExpress, and I colored some of the side bits with a black sharpy so it all matched. They cost $3.

The shirt was made from frankenstein-ing together 2 rib-knit shirts, one which I got for free from being lost in the mail, and the second from my re-purchase cost $9. It was a 'one size' shirt, which was too small, and so I used one shirt to create wide inserts in the sides of the shirt and sleeves. Then, I dyed the whole thing, slowly and meticulously, because a teal-aqua v-knit rib knit shirt was nowhere to be found.

The coat was bought on AliExpress for $18 dollars. I did a lot of work on it that didn't end up mattering (listed below) and instead bought a last-minute white lab coat on Amazon for $20.

As for the peacoat, It was too small, but I ripped out the seams in the lining so I could stretch the faux wool to make it looser. I removed pieces like a set of shoulder tabs and a back belt, and used the extra fabrics to cover a new set of buttons for the front, and sacrificed the back belt to make the straps for her sleeves. I moved the buttons, and closed up the button holes that were no longer going to be used. Then, I hand-tacked all of the separate lining pieces back into place. It's a mess, and was a lot of work.

The pants are recycled from my Mimi costume, and the shoes were... a nightmare. The boots I bought on AliExpress, one of them had a manufacturing defect where the shoes was unwearably tight across my arch. I had to unpick stitches, add pieces of pleather, and essentially re-build a good portion of them. I added the color with Angelus leather paint. The straps are a black pleather I had lying around, and all of the hearts on the boots and in her hair were purchased from AliExpress for less than $2.
