The Inspiration

This is 100% Rynn's fault. ... okay, not 100%. I had been batting around the idea of cosplaying Ed's movie form for a couple months, when I first started talking to Rynn. She told me she was planning to cosplay Al, which just made me want to do it even more. Originally, we'd planned to do it for the following Anime Expo (almost a year away), but it got pushed up when she decided to attend SakuraCon 2007. I didn't get a chance to take any real nice location photos, but I did loan the costume to my friend Tseuq for a quick shoot, so I've added those photos to this gallery too. :)

The Build

The wig is a New Look Nicole in 24B, which I cut and styled by myself. The shirt is made of cheap white muslin, using a men's dress shirt pattern with stand up collar. The vest was made using a flat men's vest pattern, with olive-green stretch-sateen fabric. The buttons are just plain black buttons, the pocket flaps completely fake and hand-sewn to the main vest. The slacks, belt, and shoes were all purchased from Value Village. The gloves are from a local costume shop, and absolutely WONDERFUL quality.

And then, the crowning glory -- the coat. I had a hell of a time finding a good pattern with the right sort of collar, that didn't have Princess Seams. I did eventually find one, and all I had to really do was lengthen it. The base coat is made from a BEAUTIFUL brown suiting. The collar, fake pocket flaps, and wrist-straps are all made from a dark brown poplin suiting. Because of the layers, I had to sew the collar incorrectly (according to the pattern) which meant I had to hand-stitch some of it to get it to look just right. Even so though, it's probably the piece that went together the quickest, and turned out the nicest.
